The short answerB12 shots for weight loss don’t work on their own. Vitamin B12 helps your body use food, but in people with normal B12 levels, no good evidence shows that a B12 shot speeds up metabolism or burns fat. If your B12 is low, correcting it is worth doing for your health, and the injections with strong weight-loss evidence are prescription GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Many clinics advertise B12 shots for weight loss, often as a “metabolism” or “fat burner” shot. It’s an easy idea to believe, because B12 really is involved in turning food into energy. But being involved in metabolism is not the same as speeding it up. In this guide, Dr. Melanie Espinet, a board-certified family physician at MeliOra Elite Wellness in Lutz, explains what B12 actually does, what the research shows about B12 and weight, how B12 fits with GLP-1 medications, and what does help.

Do B12 shots for weight loss work?

Not on their own. Here is what the evidence says:

  • B12 is not a weight-loss medicine. NIDDK, part of the NIH, lists the prescription medications approved for long-term weight management, and vitamin B12 is not one of them.
  • Weight loss isn’t among the health topics the NIH B12 fact sheet reviews. It shows up only as one possible effect of a B12 deficiency, the opposite of the marketing.
  • B12 doesn’t boost your workouts either. The NIH notes that B12 is often promoted as an energy and endurance booster, but supplements don’t appear to improve performance in people whose B12 is already sufficient.
  • B12 isn’t even on the supplement list. The NIH fact sheet on dietary supplements for weight loss reviews more than 20 ingredients, B12 is not among them, and the sheet calls the evidence for weight-loss supplements in general inconclusive and unconvincing.

So why do some people say they lost weight on B12 shots? People who start a shot routine often change other things at the same time, such as their diet, their activity or a prescription medication, and there is no way to tell which part did the work. If your B12 was low and you felt run down, treating it can help you feel more like yourself. That is worth doing, but it isn’t fat loss. Our guide to B12 shot benefits covers what a shot can do for people who are low.

B12 and metabolism: what B12 really does

Vitamin B12 does have a real job in metabolism. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, it works as a helper, or cofactor, for two enzymes. One turns homocysteine into methionine, an amino acid the body needs for many chemical reactions involving DNA, proteins and fats. The other helps the body process propionate, a short-chain fatty acid. MedlinePlus adds that B12, like the other B vitamins, is important for protein metabolism, and that it helps form red blood cells and maintain the nervous system.

Having a role in metabolism is not the same as speeding it up. Adults need only a few micrograms of B12 a day, and once that need is met, there is no good evidence that extra B12 raises your metabolic rate or burns fat. The NIH also notes that the body does not store excess B12, which is part of why even large doses are considered safe.

What B12 does

  • Helps make healthy red blood cells
  • Keeps nerves working normally
  • Helps make DNA
  • Supports protein metabolism
  • Relieves fatigue caused by a true deficiency

What B12 has not been shown to do

  • Raise your metabolic rate
  • Burn fat or shrink belly fat
  • Lower your appetite or cravings
  • Boost energy or endurance when your level is already normal
  • Replace food, activity or medical weight loss

Is low B12 linked to weight?

There are hints of a link, but not one that makes B12 a weight-loss tool. A 2018 systematic review in Obesity Reviews pooled 19 observational studies with 7,055 people. In an exploratory analysis, people with a higher body mass index (BMI) tended to have lower B12 levels. But the evidence was inconsistent, every study carried a high risk of bias, and the authors concluded that the review did not establish the link.

Even if the link is real, it would not show that B12 shots cause weight loss. A 2025 joint advisory from four lifestyle medicine, nutrition and obesity groups, including the Obesity Medicine Association, explains why nutrient shortfalls in general can show up in people with obesity: they are more likely to start with eating patterns that leave nutrient gaps, and obesity itself can change how nutrients are absorbed and used. The right response to a low level is to treat the low level, not to expect the scale to move.

B12 and GLP-1: do you need B12 on semaglutide or tirzepatide?

This is where B12 can genuinely matter during weight loss. GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide lower appetite, and the 2025 joint advisory notes that people taking them eat much less. A large, rapid drop in food intake can leave you short on essential vitamins and minerals, and the advisory names B12 among the nutrients of concern, along with iron, calcium, vitamin D and others.

Its advice is practical. Build meals around nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods. Consider supplements such as vitamin D, calcium, B12 or a multivitamin when a nutrient is at risk, at doses tailored to you. Recheck nutrient levels during treatment so a shortfall is caught early. Because B12 comes from animal foods and fortified foods, eating far less meat, fish, eggs and dairy can lower how much you take in.

Two more groups should talk with their physician about B12. Metformin, a common diabetes medicine that some people take alongside a GLP-1, may reduce B12 absorption and lower B12 levels. And weight-loss surgery can remove some or all of the stomach cells that make acid and intrinsic factor, which B12 absorption depends on.

What a B12 shot won’t do is make a GLP-1 work better. In the joint advisory, B12 comes up as a nutrient to protect from a shortfall, not as a way to lose more weight. Its job is to fill a nutrient gap if you have one. Our guide to what to eat on semaglutide covers protein and nutrient-dense meals, and B12 deficiency symptoms lists the signs worth reporting.

Does adding a lipotropic blend change the answer?

Not much. Lipotropic blends are nutrients involved in how the liver handles fat, formulas vary from clinic to clinic, and the evidence is thin: for carnitine, one ingredient sold for weight loss, the NIH weight-loss fact sheet reports at most a possible modest reduction in body weight, from trials where weight was a secondary outcome. Our pages on lipo B12 shots in Lutz and Lipo-C and lipotropic injections cover them in detail.

What actually helps with weight loss

The NIH weight-loss fact sheet sums up the expert view: lifestyle changes, including a healthy dietary pattern, fewer calories and physical activity, are the basis for long-term weight loss. For adults who need more help, prescription medication is the evidence-based next step. NIDDK says you may be a candidate if your BMI is 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes, and that these medications work best combined with a lifestyle program.

  • Meals built on minimally processed foods: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, lean proteins, nuts and seeds
  • Strength training, which the joint advisory recommends to help preserve muscle and bone while you lose weight
  • Attention to sleep and stress, which the advisory includes in its lifestyle assessment
  • A physician-supervised GLP-1 plan, if you qualify

How B12 fits into weight loss at MeliOra

At MeliOra, B12 is a wellness shot, not a weight-loss treatment, and we say so plainly. Revital B12 is $30 a shot, or $80 for 4, given by Dr. Espinet herself at your home, your office or the Lutz office, with no travel fee anywhere in our Tampa Bay service area. A B12 shot can make sense if you take metformin, eat little or no animal food, have had weight-loss surgery, or eat much less on a GLP-1, and your physician agrees you need it.

For weight loss itself, Dr. Espinet prescribes semaglutide or tirzepatide through medical weight loss in Lutz. Semaglutide starts at $150/month and tirzepatide at $230/month, and the monthly price includes physician visits, lab work, medication and supplies, dose adjustments and check-ins. If you’re in the program and wondering about B12, bring it up at a check-in, and she will tell you honestly whether a shot, a pill or nothing at all makes sense. For the shot itself, see B12 and lipotropic shots in Lutz, or book a visit.

Frequently asked questions

Do B12 shots help you lose weight?

No, not on their own. B12 is not on the NIH list of approved weight-management medications, and in people with normal B12 levels there is no good evidence that a shot speeds metabolism or burns fat. Correcting a true deficiency is worth doing for your health, but it is not a weight-loss treatment.

Does B12 speed up your metabolism?

There is no good evidence that it does. B12 is a helper for enzymes involved in metabolism, but once your body has enough, extra B12 has not been shown to raise your metabolic rate. The NIH also finds that B12 supplements don’t improve performance or endurance when your level is already sufficient.

Should I take B12 while on semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Only if you need it. A 2025 joint advisory notes that eating much less on a GLP-1 can leave you short on nutrients, including B12, and suggests supplements such as B12 or a multivitamin when a nutrient is at risk. Ask your physician whether your diet, medications or lab results point to a need.

Can low B12 cause weight gain?

The NIH fact sheet does not list weight gain as an effect of low B12. It lists weight loss, along with fatigue, anemia and nerve changes, among the possible effects of a deficiency. If you are gaining weight and feel tired, a visit with a physician can look for the real cause.

Can B12 shots help you lose belly fat?

No. There is no good evidence that B12 burns fat anywhere in the body, belly included. The approaches with real evidence are lifestyle changes and, for adults who qualify, prescription weight-management medication, which works best combined with a lifestyle program.

Who should check their B12 during weight loss?

People taking metformin, people who have had weight-loss surgery, people on vegan or vegetarian diets, and anyone eating much less on a GLP-1 medication. The NIH and a 2025 joint advisory on GLP-1 nutrition describe these groups as more likely to run low. Ask your physician whether a blood test makes sense for you.

Is it safe to take extra B12 while losing weight?

For most people, yes: B12 has no official upper limit and is generally considered safe, even at high doses. Safe is not the same as useful, though, and if your level is normal, extra B12 has not been shown to help you lose weight. People allergic to cobalt or vitamin B12 should not get B12 shots.
