The short answerMost people start to see Botox work within 3 to 7 days, and the full effect shows at about two weeks. The Xeomin label puts the median onset at two to seven days after injection. Your result then holds for about 3 to 4 months.

How long does Botox take to work? Less time than most people fear, but longer than the appointment itself. The injections take minutes, and the result builds quietly over the next two weeks. Here is the day-by-day timeline Dr. Melanie Espinet walks MeliOra patients through, what the research shows, and why two weeks is the checkpoint that matters. At MeliOra, Botox means Jeuveau or Xeomin, given by a physician. See Botox in Lutz for the full service.

How long does Botox take to work?

Most people notice the first change within 3 to 7 days, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The prescribing information for Xeomin, one of our two Botox brands, says the median onset of its effect is within two to seven days after injection. In the two U.S. trials behind Jeuveau, our other Botox brand, the difference between treated people and placebo was already visible at the first check, on day 2.

The full effect takes longer than the first change. In a small study of 23 people treated for frown lines with incobotulinumtoxinA, the active ingredient in Xeomin, most of the change showed up within two to four days, and the peak came at about two weeks. That’s why Dr. Espinet asks you to wait about two weeks before you judge your result.

Botox results timeline: day by day

Here is what a typical Botox timeline looks like for the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

WhenWhat you may notice
Treatment daySmall raised spots where the needle went in usually settle within an hour or so. Your lines look the same as before.
Days 1 to 2Some people notice early softening. In the Jeuveau trials, a difference from placebo was already visible on day 2.
Days 3 to 7Most people see Botox kick in during this window. Frowning or raising your brows takes more effort.
Days 7 to 14The effect keeps building toward its peak. Lines on movement look clearly softer.
About day 14The full effect for most upper-face lines. The best time to judge your result and compare photos.
Weeks 2 to 12Lines that show even when your face is still can keep softening slowly.
Months 3 to 4Movement gradually returns, the signal to plan your next visit.

These are typical patterns, not promises. Your timing depends on the area, your dose, and your muscles. Once you reach the end of the table, see how long Botox lasts for what affects the months that follow.

When does Botox kick in, and why isn’t it instant?

Botox works on the signal between nerve and muscle, not on the skin itself. The Jeuveau prescribing information explains that the toxin binds to motor nerve endings, enters them, and blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical messenger that tells a muscle to contract. The result is a local drop in muscle activity. These steps happen inside the nerve endings, and the effect builds over several days rather than appearing the moment the needle comes out.

Once the muscle pulls less, the skin over it creases less, and expression lines soften. For the fuller science, see what Botox is and how it works.

Why some lines take longer to soften

Lines that appear only when you frown, squint, or raise your brows respond first, because they depend on the muscle moving. Lines that show even when your face is relaxed soften more slowly. In the incobotulinumtoxinA study, frown lines at rest kept improving gradually and looked their best at about weeks 12 to 13, long after the effect on movement had peaked.

So if a line you see at rest looks only a little softer at two weeks, give it time. A deep line at rest may soften without disappearing, because a muscle relaxer works on movement and doesn’t add volume.

Does Botox take longer to work in some areas?

Most areas settle in about two weeks. The jaw is the exception when the goal is a slimmer face.

AreaWhen you’ll usually see the full effect
Forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feetAbout two weeks
Lip flipA subtle change within a few days to a week, and the full effect by about two weeks
Masseter (jaw), for clenchingThe muscle starts to relax in the first week and is often near its peak by about two weeks
Masseter (jaw), for slimmingA slimmer contour usually starts to show between four and eight weeks

Jaw slimming is the slow one, because the muscle has to get smaller before your face looks different. See masseter Botox in Lutz for that full timeline.

First time Botox: what to expect from your results

Your first result follows the same timeline: for most people, a change within the first week and the full effect at about two weeks. The first few days can feel like nothing is happening, and that’s normal. A few planning tips for first time Botox:

  • Book at least two weeks before an event, so your result has settled. For a wedding, plan the final treatment about a month before, and if it’s your first time, start three to four months out
  • Take a photo before treatment and another at two weeks, in the same light, making the same expressions
  • Expect a conservative first dose. Dr. Espinet aims for a rested look, not a frozen one, and how your muscles respond the first time guides your next dose
  • Your first visit includes a consultation, and you agree on your areas, units, and total before treatment begins

For how to get ready, see what to avoid before Botox. For the first hours and days after, read our Botox aftercare guide.

The Botox 2-week follow-up: why two weeks matters

Two weeks is when the result has settled for most upper-face lines, so it’s the fairest time to judge it. The clinical trials for Jeuveau and Xeomin measured their main results even later, at day 30. Before two weeks, you may be judging a result that’s still building.

At the two-week mark, do your own follow-up check. Look in the mirror and at your photos and ask:

  • Can I still frown or raise my brows more than I expected?
  • Do both sides look even when I move?
  • Does any area feel heavy, especially a brow or an eyelid?
  • Do I like how much natural movement I kept?

If something looks uneven or not what you expected at two weeks, contact Dr. Espinet directly. She recorded your units and injection sites, so she can tell you whether an adjustment makes sense. A heavy brow or drooping lid is uncommon and temporary; see droopy eyelid after Botox. For bruising, headaches, and other short-lived effects, see Botox side effects.

One safety note matters more than any timeline. The Xeomin Medication Guide warns that serious problems, such as trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing, can happen hours to weeks after an injection. If that happens, get medical care right away, and call 911 in an emergency.

What if Botox isn’t working after two weeks?

A result that’s weaker than you hoped usually has a simple explanation. The dose may have been light for your muscle, a strong muscle may need more units, or the line may be etched in at rest and still softening. Dr. Espinet reviews your result and your history before changing anything, and she adjusts your next dose from what she sees. For how doses are set by area, see how many units of Botox you need.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Botox take to work?

Most people see Botox start to work within 3 to 7 days, with the full effect at about two weeks. The Xeomin label gives a median onset of two to seven days after injection.

When does Botox kick in?

Botox usually kicks in within the first week, often in the first few days. In the Jeuveau trials, a difference from placebo was already visible on day 2, and the effect keeps building until about day 14.

Can Botox work in 24 hours?

Not fully. Some people notice an early change by the second day, but most see Botox start to work within 3 to 7 days, and the full result takes about two weeks.

What does Botox look like after 1 week?

At one week, most people see clearly softer lines when they frown or raise their brows, but the result can keep building for another week. Wait until about two weeks to judge the final effect.

Is it normal for Botox to take 2 weeks to work?

Yes. The full effect of Botox usually takes about two weeks, even though the first change often shows in a few days. The main trials for Jeuveau and Xeomin measured their results at day 30.

How far before an event should I get Botox?

Get Botox at least two weeks before an event, so your result has fully settled. For a wedding, plan the final treatment about a month before, and start three to four months out if it’s your first time.

What should I check at my 2-week Botox follow-up?

Check whether both sides look even, whether you kept the movement you wanted, and whether any area feels heavy. If something looks off at two weeks, contact Dr. Espinet so she can review it and tell you whether an adjustment makes sense.

Why is my Botox not working after 2 weeks?

The most common reasons are a dose that was light for your muscle, a strong muscle that needs more units, or lines at rest that soften slowly. Contact Dr. Espinet, who reviews your result and history before changing your plan.
