The orbicularis oris is the ring of muscle around your mouth. It purses your lips, and when you smile it can pull the edge of your upper lip slightly inward. For some people that pull makes the upper lip seem to vanish in a smile.

Safety and Candidacy
Side effects, and who should wait
Good candidates want a subtle change: an upper lip that disappears when smiling, a little gum show, or a low-commitment first treatment.
Side effects are usually mild. Small bumps at the injection points settle quickly, and any tenderness, swelling, or pinpoint bruise is usually brief. Because the lip muscle is treated, drinking through a straw, whistling, or saying certain sounds may feel different, and a little dribbling when drinking is possible; these fade as the dose wears off. Less commonly, the smile looks slightly uneven or a headache follows. As with any neuromodulator, seek medical care right away for rare symptoms such as trouble swallowing or breathing, or muscle weakness away from the treated area.
